Will grass survive a St Kilda yard with kids and a dog?
Yes, if the base is right and the variety suits. We use a hardy runner like Sir Walter Buffalo that repairs itself after a summer of traffic, and we build a base that drains so the worn track to the gate does not turn to mud in July. Where a courtyard is too shaded or too busy for grass to hold on, artificial turf takes the punishment without complaint.
Our garden is common property behind a block of flats. Can you still do it?
Yes, and most St Kilda lawns we lay are exactly that. Flats and apartments were 79 per cent of dwellings here at the 2021 census, so a shared garden is the normal job, not the odd one. We work to whatever the owners have agreed, keep the site tidy because people are living all around it, and barrow everything in where a machine cannot reach.
How small is too small for a St Kilda lawn?
Nothing is too small. Tight courtyards behind period homes and interwar flats are normal here, and a few square metres still deserves a proper base.
