Research lawns share their space with the bush. On the large blocks out here a lawn is usually a clearing carved into a native setting, framed by established gums and natural undergrowth, so it has to look at home next to all of that rather than fight it. The native soil sits over heavier subsoil in places and runs unevenly across a sloping bush block, so a lawn here lives or dies on the base beneath it. We rebuild that base to drain properly and feed the grass, choose a variety that copes with the dappled shade thrown by tall trees and the full heat of a Melbourne summer, and lay it level across ground that rarely starts flat. Where a section sits in deep shade under the canopy, or competes with thirsty tree roots that no grass can win against, artificial turf stays flat and green all year with no mowing.
