The suburb began as Sandridge, named for the dune ridge along its beach, and that sand was quarried away for Melbourne’s building trade before the holes were filled in again. Silt dredged during the Coode Canal works of the 1880s went into reclamation here. The old lagoon was closed over by 1929 and is now Lagoon Reserve. Beacon Cove had to have its ground remediated before a dwelling went up. Below a good deal of the suburb sits Coode Island Silt, which can turn acidic once it is disturbed and left wet, and above that imported fill carrying a heavier metal load than the natural sediment ever did. The whole place is barely 7 metres above sea level and close to dead flat, so water does not run off, it sits. We dig, we look, and we build the base and the drainage for what is actually there.
