Laid on Ground That Drains.

Turf Installation in Nunawading.

Gardenscape lays natural and artificial turf across Nunawading, and on these blocks the lawn is the floor of the whole yard. It is where the table ends up, where the kids run and where everyone stands on a Saturday, so it has to sit flat, shed water fast and take the wear. Nunawading sits about 130 metres up on gently undulating ground in the Yarra catchment, which sounds forgiving and is not: water moves slowly here and stops wherever the levels let it. So every job starts underneath. Levels corrected, drainage set, a base built for the ground it is actually on. The turf is the last thing we do, not the first.

Below the Surface

The Part Under the Grass Decides the Rest.

Bad turf jobs fail the same way every time. The old surface gets a quick scrape, the grass goes straight over the top, and one wet Nunawading winter later it is patchy, boggy or gone. On clay that holds water, laying turf over the problem only hides it for a season. We excavate, correct the fall, build a base that genuinely drains and set it up to move a Melbourne downpour off the lawn instead of through it. That is why ours still look laid last week years on.

Natural Turf.

Real grass, picked for your block. Sir Walter Buffalo and other varieties matched to the sun your Nunawading yard gets, the clay sitting under it and how hard the space gets used, laid over a base built to keep it going for years.

Artificial Turf.

Synthetic turf for the spots that have to look sharp every day of the year and ask nothing back. The rule underneath does not change: the base and the drainage decide whether it stays flat and sheds water. Ours do.

A Lawn You Can Put the Table On.

Levelled for the Way You Use It.

Nunawading lawns get used, and mostly they get used for entertaining. These are family blocks in the heart of Whitehorse, big enough that the grass is the entertaining floor rather than a strip of green beside it, so it has to stay level under a table, survive kids and pets all weekend and come back by Monday. Three things decide whether it does. The ground is gently undulating rather than steep, around 130 metres up, so water leaves slowly. The subsoil is dense clay that compacts under repeat traffic and holds what it takes. And the fall has to end somewhere real: Koonung Creek rises near Springvale Road on the Blackburn North side and runs west along the northern edge of the old Nunawading parish, and everything up here is eventually headed that way. The only question on your yard is whether it gets there or stops in the lawn first. So we rebuild the base to drain, set the levels so water leaves, then lay a tough natural variety that copes with full Melbourne sun and a busy backyard. Where a corner sits in permanent shade under established canopy, or takes so much traffic nothing survives, artificial turf holds flat and green through the year. We lay lawn the same way across Blackburn, Mitcham and Vermont, and where the yard needs building before it needs grass we handle landscaping in Nunawading too.
