Turf laid straight onto Ivanhoe clay fails the same way every time. The old surface gets a quick scrape, the grass goes on top, and within a season it is patchy, waterlogged or dead, because a clay subsoil gives the water nowhere to go. We excavate to depth, set the falls, build a free draining base and run the drainage to match. That is why our lawns still look installed day fresh years later.

Natural Turf.

Real grass, chosen for your block. Shade tolerant buffalo varieties such as Sir Walter earn their keep under the mature canopies here, and we pick against the light you actually get, the clay below and the traffic the lawn really takes, then build the base that keeps it healthy for years.

Artificial Turf.

Synthetic turf for the spots where grass will never win: deep shade under a protected canopy, or a narrow side return that sees no sun from one month to the next. Same rule applies. The base and the drainage decide whether it stays flat, drains fast and lasts. Ours do.

Ivanhoe lawns sit on three different grounds. High on the ridge near Upper Heidelberg Road it is clay over Silurian rock, and the whole job is getting water away. Down toward The Boulevard the land falls hard to the Yarra flats, where Wilson Reserve and Chelsworth Park sit on genuine floodplain and a lawn copes with water off the slope above it as well as its own rain. West, the ground tips into the Darebin Creek escarpment. We read the fall, cut the base to it, and drain each one differently. We also lay turf across Rosanna and Northcote, and take on the full landscaping in Ivanhoe when the whole garden needs rebuilding.

What is under an Ivanhoe lawn once you dig?

Clay, most of the time. Ivanhoe sits over Silurian siltstone and mudstone, the same rock that shows itself in the escarpment along Darebin Creek on the western edge of the suburb, and it weathers down to a heavy clay subsoil. Water sits on clay rather than soaking through it. That is why we excavate properly, build a free draining base and set the falls before a single roll goes down, instead of scraping the old surface and rolling grass over the top.

Does the fall to the Yarra change how you drain a lawn?

On the low side it decides everything. South of The Boulevard the ground drops away to the Yarra flats, and the reserves down there are working floodplain, so a lawn near the bottom takes water off the whole slope above it as well as the rain that lands on it. We cut in drainage that intercepts the uphill water before it ever reaches the turf, then set the lawn level enough to use and just off level enough to shed.

Can you lay turf under the big protected trees?

Usually, with the right variety and a bit of care. Banyule protects listed significant trees and vegetation, so a permit is needed before anything is removed or lopped, and we work with the canopy rather than around it. Where enough light gets through we use a shade tolerant natural variety and prepare the base without carving up the root zone. Where the light simply is not there, artificial turf stays green when nothing living would.
