Greensborough lawns sit on hills, and the design stage is where that gets dealt with. The suburb runs along the ridges above the Plenty River, where the escarpment corridor drops away toward the Yarra, so a yard that looks flat from the back door usually is not. Under it the ground is Silurian claystone and clayey siltstone, poor material that holds water when it rains, though the north of the suburb toward Bundoora runs onto Older Volcanics basalt instead, so we check rather than guess. These yards came out of orchard and grazing land subdivided through the 1950s and 1960s, which is why there is room for a proper lawn and why nobody ever resolved the levels. So the order runs: survey the fall, correct the grade, build a base that drains, and only then lay. Where the canopy throws the sort of shade you get at the edge of the Green Wedge, we either move the lawn into the light or go synthetic and say so up front. We also lay turf across Montmorency and Macleod.
