An Eltham lawn has to hold its own in a bush garden. Native planting, leaf drop and the deep shade thrown by established gums all compete with the grass, the ground bakes hard and drains poorly through a dry summer, and old roots run shallow right where you want a flat green surface. So we work from underneath up. We strip back and rebuild the base so it drains and feeds the grass, pick a tough natural variety that takes both patchy light and a full beating from the Melbourne sun, and set it dead level across the big open runs these blocks give you. Where a corner sits in year round shade, or the ground is simply too dry and rooted for grass to take, we lay artificial turf that holds a clean green finish with no watering and no mowing. The result is a surface that suits a native Eltham garden instead of looking dropped in on top of it.
