Lawns Built From the Base Up.

Turf Installation in Doncaster.

A Doncaster lawn is a drainage problem before it is a grass problem. The ground here is grey loam weathered off Silurian mudstone and siltstone, with clay sitting close underneath, and the whole suburb tilts off Doncaster Hill toward Ruffey Creek and Koonung Creek. Water arrives fast, then the clay refuses to take it. So every Doncaster install starts with excavation, corrected falls and a free draining base cut to shed water where we want it. The turf goes down last.

Below the Surface

On This Ground, the Base Decides.

Failed Doncaster lawns nearly all share one cause. Someone scraped the old surface, rolled turf straight onto compacted clay, and let the slope do the rest. By the second winter it is boggy at the bottom of the yard and bare at the top. We dig it out, set the falls, build a base that actually drains, and size the drainage for a Melbourne downpour landing on a hillside. That is why our lawns still sit flat and green years later.

Natural Turf.

Real grass, matched to a Doncaster aspect. A yard on the open fall off the ridge and a yard shaded by a canopy left over from the orchard days want different varieties, so we pick from Sir Walter Buffalo and others based on what your block actually gets, then build the base that keeps it healthy for years.

Artificial Turf.

Synthetic turf for the parts of a Doncaster block that beat natural grass: deep shade under an established canopy, a steep batter off the ridge, a strip that never quite dries out. Same rule applies. The base and the falls decide whether it stays flat, drains fast and lasts. Ours do.

Planned Around Your Block.

Doncaster sits high and sheds water. The suburb sits at roughly 108 metres around Doncaster Hill, and the land falls away from there to Ruffey Creek on the Templestowe side and Koonung Creek to the south. The catchment is demanding enough that retardation basins were built into what is now Ruffey Lake Park just to slow the stormwater down. Your backyard is doing a smaller version of the same job. Below it is grey loam over Silurian clay that holds water and sets hard under foot, which is why we rebuild the ground rather than dress it: excavation, corrected falls, a free draining base, then a hard wearing natural variety like Sir Walter Buffalo laid tight across the bigger areas these blocks allow. Where a section sits in permanent shade or on a grade no grass will hold, artificial turf goes there instead and stays flat and green through the year. We also lay turf across Doncaster East and Templestowe, and when the whole yard is in play, our landscaping in Doncaster runs off the same base work.
