Rushed turf jobs fail the same way every time. The old surface gets a quick scrape, turf goes straight on top, and one season later the frontage is scalped along the kerb and soft in the low corner. We excavate, correct the levels, build a proper base and run drainage that copes with a Melbourne downpour. That is why a Canterbury frontage we laid years ago still reads sharp from the footpath.
Natural Turf.
Real grass, chosen for the frontage it has to fill. Under the Pin oaks and London planes that line these streets that usually means a shade tolerant buffalo such as Sir Walter, laid over a base built to stay level right out to the footpath.
Artificial Turf.
Synthetic turf for the strips that never get a fair go: a shaded side return, a narrow verge, the dark ground under a century old oak. Same rule applies, the base and drainage decide whether it stays flat and drains fast. Ours do.

Planned Around the Setback.
Canterbury was carved up estate by estate once the railway arrived in 1882, starting with the Claremont Park Estate in 1885, and the houses that followed sat well back behind their gardens. The Canterbury Hill Estate citation says it outright: the setbacks to street boundaries containing gardens, lawns and landscaped areas are part of why the precinct is significant. That makes a front lawn heritage fabric rather than decoration, and it is why we will not hand one over with a soft edge or a wandering level. Out the back the job changes. The terrain runs gently undulating across the precinct, and along the old West Creek line, where a long culvert once carried the water under the low point of Canterbury Road, the ground still collects what the residual clay will not take. Do you lay turf inside the Canterbury heritage precincts?
Yes, and across the rest of the 3126. Amendment C266 alone added six precincts here, from Rochester Road to the streets running off Maling Road. The overlay bites on demolition, buildings, works and fences rather than on the grass itself, so laying a lawn is rarely the part that needs a permit. We will tell you straight when something does.
What survives under Canterbury’s old street oaks?
Monomeath Avenue was made in 1911 and planted with oaks that are still standing, and Pin oaks and London planes run along streets right through the precinct. Under canopy like that we lay a shade tolerant buffalo such as Sir Walter wherever the light allows, and artificial turf in the deep spots where no grass will hold.
Why does one corner of my Canterbury lawn stay wet?
It is usually sitting on the old low line. West Creek once ran from the south west to the north east through what is now Canterbury Gardens, passing under a long culvert at the lowest part of Canterbury Road, and a deep hollow still marks it. The residual clay underneath holds what the creek used to carry away. We find the fall, rebuild the profile and run drainage to suit before a single roll goes down.
