Planned Around Your Block.
South Yarra was a suburb of mansions before it was a suburb of flats. Through the 1920s and 1930s the big Victorian era garden estates were carved up and apartment blocks went in, which is why the courtyard behind a Darling Street or Lawson Grove building is so often a surviving fragment of a much larger nineteenth century garden, mature trees and all. Those trees usually decide the design. Punt Road also splits South Yarra between two councils and the rules are not identical on each side: east of it the City of Stonnington calls a tree significant at 140cm of trunk circumference measured 1.4 metres above the base, and work on one needs a Tree Works Permit. We confirm which side you are on before we draw anything. After that it is about the outdoor room itself, whether that is a paved entertaining terrace off a Domain Road apartment, a courtyard borrowing the canopy of Fawkner Park, or a garden on one of the old Como estate streets down near Williams Road. We also build across Toorak and Windsor, and we lay turf in South Yarra as part of the same build.
