Macleod rewards a garden that is planned for the block it sits on. The suburb grew up around the Mont Park hospital, which is why the housing runs in bands: the 1919 Victoria Cross estate streets, the postwar estate homes that went up through the 1950s and 1960s boom, and the newer builds on the old hospital land at Springthorpe. Each one opens a different brief. Under all of them is the same folded Silurian ridge country of Melbourne’s north east, clay heavy and rarely flat, so we survey the fall before anything is drawn. Then we build it as one job: retaining and steps that turn a slope into a terrace, paving set true for a table and chairs, beds that read against the gum canopy already standing, and drainage that clears a Melbourne downpour instead of pooling at the back door. Do Banyule tree controls affect a landscaping project in Macleod?

They can. Banyule requires a planning permit to remove, lop or destroy a tree listed under its significant vegetation controls, and a permit can also be needed to build or carry out works within 5 metres of that canopy. We check the overlay before we set out a deck or a paved entertaining area, then design the levels and the footings so the tree and the build both survive.

Can you build a level entertaining area on a Macleod block that falls?

Yes, and most of them do fall. Macleod sits on the folded Silurian ridges and gullies that run through Melbourne’s north east, so very few rear yards start flat. We survey the fall, then set retaining, steps and a terrace that sits square with the house rather than chasing the slope down the block.

Their back yards were never planned for the way families cook and eat outside now, so we rework the levels, the drainage and the flow from the back door out.
